Thanks to the use of automation to park cars, less space is required to accommodate the needs of people, resulting in a smaller building volume. In addition, pre-fabricated building materials can be put together in record time, greatly simplifying the construction process and saving money at the same time. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Hospitals
and medical centers all over the world struggle to cope with the ever-increasing
demand for their services and the accompanying increase in demand for parking.
Urban hospitals, in particular, often have to choose between using the scarce
land available to add additional floor space for services and parking areas. Fortunately,
there are possible solutions that make parking much more space efficient, thus
allowing hospitals to enhance both their services and parking supply at the
same time.</span></div>

Hospital Parking</span></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">For
a hospital to run efficiently, it’s essential that patients, staff and visitors
are able to come and go easily. When hospital parking is in short supply, problems
may occur:</span></div>

patient satisfaction and reputation</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">When
hospital expansion planners allow medical services to take precedence over
parking, the result can include significantly increasing parking costs, wasting
valuable land, aggravating surrounding communities and inconveniencing or
endangering patients and staff.</span></span><br />

Parking in Less Space</span></span></b></div>
<div>
<span style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Automated
parking systems or APS make it possible for hospitals to use land more
efficiently in order to meet the growing demand for services and parking. By
removing people from the parking process, APS can more than double the number
parking spaces offered by multi-story car parks (no driving lanes, no ramps, no
walkways, stairwells or elevators). APS can provide parking in small or irregularly
shaped areas that are unsuitable for conventional parking solutions. This is
ideal for creating parking spaces in the unusual areas left over after numerous
hospital expansions. Moreover, APS are inherently safer, more secure and easier
for people with disabilities to access than conventional parking facilities
such as standard car parks.</span></span></div>

<div>
<span style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Hospitals
that include car parking at the earliest stages of expansion planning are
likely to end up making best possible use of the land. This is especially true
when the scarcity of land requires a highly space-efficient parking solution.
In order to achieve maximum land savings by opting for a flexible and very
compact APS solution, it’s best to plan for this at the concept stage.</span></span></div>

parking requirements (MPR) are laws requiring new buildings to include a fixed
number of off-street parking spaces based on an assumed demand for parking
generated by the buildings' use. This dates back to the early 1950s with its
rapid urban and suburban development, resulting in an explosion in the number
of cars worldwide and a shortage of parking. Some cities went so far as to use
MPR to define the number of parking spaces for small businesses such as car
washes or fruit stands, but they were more commonly assigned to bedrooms,
classrooms or retail spaces. However, as urban spaces have become ever more
crowded, many cities around the world are reconsidering the MPR concept.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">One
of the biggest concerns with MPR is that they waste a great deal of space by
applying a "one size fits all" solution to a complex and evolving
situation. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">In
one European country, for example, theatres and cinemas were required to
provide one parking space for every three seats. This is a waste of valuable
land, as these venues are rarely fully occupied, plus a lot of visitors will
walk, cycle or take public transport instead, meaning at least half of the
parking spaces go constantly unused. City planners and developers can often
identify countless examples of wasted urban land due to MPR.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">Increasing
urban populations are demanding more living space and MPR has led to the
creation of excess, poorly-distributed and under-utilized parking facilities in
many European cities. Some of these have taken steps to repurpose this valuable
land, e.g. Zurich and Hamburg were leaders in the revolution against minimum
parking requirements. Both have frozen the number of parking spaces in their
city centers, eliminating one on-street parking space for each new off-street
parking space.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">The
Netherlands started addressing MPR in 1989 by classifying cities according to
the following three criteria:</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "symbol"; text-indent: -18pt;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span></span></div>

Parking has determined that the future of EV recharging technology will be
focused on what’s known as "inductive" or "wireless" recharging.
This is the same technology that is currently used in charging pads for
smartphones and electric toothbrushes, but on a much larger scale. The first major
benefit of inductive recharging is the fact that it is wireless, meaning no
mechanical connection is required and it’s much easier to use. Secondly, it has
the potential to shorten recharging times.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

article describes how turning numerous parking lots into building space made
downtown Denver more livable and walkable. Most interesting however is the
final quote of the article: "Often people will say there isn't parking,
but what they mean is that there isn't parking right in front of the location
they're going to. It may be three or four blocks away,…" The question this
raises is whether parking "three or four blocks away" is a trivial

through the 1800s, but industrialization accelerated technological advances starting
in the early 1900s. Steel conveyor belts were introduced in 1901 and conveyor
belts developed for coal mining in 1905 revolutionized the mining industry. The
first patent for roller conveyors was issued in 1908 and Henry Ford introduced
conveyor belts into his Highland Park, Michigan factory in 1913.</span></div>

CBS have only two
motions: the rollers and belt move in one direction or the opposite direction…that's
it. There are no wasted motions such as deadheading, raising, lowering,
extending, retracting, swinging, folding, etc. Similarly, energy efficiency
comes in two forms: using less energy because of the greatly reduced friction
(minimal force needed movement objects) and not requiring energy to lift the entire
weight of the car off the ground.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";"><br /></span></b></div>

most popular solution for moving materials and objects from one point to
another is the conveyor…and quite frequently the belt and roller conveyor. The
reliability and availability of these systems generally results from the basic
nature and low stress of individual components: low friction bearings, multiple
rollers sharing weight, optimized roller spacing, etc.</span></div>

parking revenue is a major source of income for most airports and is often the
highest income source not directly related to aircraft operations. The increase
in global airline passengers shown by World Bank data suggests an increased demand
for airport parking. But, what happens when travelers, visitors and employees
encounter parking problems? Some of the possible consequences are described
below.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">Customer Satisfaction<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">The
ease with which airport parking customers can locate open parking spaces close to
the terminal directly relates to their satisfaction. Parking customers,
however, are often unaware of parking shortages until arriving at the airport.
This leads to stress, frustration and the potential of missing flights. If
parking shortages occur regularly, airports risk losing parking revenue when
customers switch to using private parking facilities, different modes of
transport such as buses, trains or being dropped off and picked up by family or
friends. Moreover, getting customers to return to using airport parking once
they have switched to other options is never easy.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">Increased Traffic Congestion
& Emissions<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">Travelers
going from one parking lot to another in search of parking spaces increase the
volume of traffic on airport roadways. However, even when travelers choose not
to park at airports, the potential for traffic congestion on airport property
and surrounding roadways can increase substantially. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">The
number of vehicle trips to airports and on surrounding roads can more than
double when travelers switch from parking at the airport to being dropped off
and picked up by family or friends. When travelers park at airports, they make
one trip. They drive in once, park and leave once. However, cars drive in and
leave once when dropping off travelers then they drive in and leave a second
time for the pickup. In the common situation where returning travelers are
delayed, pickup vehicles often circle airport roadways, find free places to
stand, idle and wait or drive to and from remote areas waiting for a phone call
from the arrived traveler ("cell phone parking area"). In such cases,
the travelers' shift away from airport parking increases traffic congestion and
auto emissions while generating no parking revenue for the airports.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">While
the primary focus of airport parking is generating revenue from travelers and
visitors, airport employees must not be overlooked. Employees working directly
for airports and those working for airlines and airport vendors and service
providers need reasonable commuting access to their workplaces. Access may be
via public transport or by driving and parking at the airport. A lack of
convenient and affordable parking for airport employees can make it more
difficult and costly to retain employees, especially those who are temporary or
part time.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

airport parking situations may have some positive benefits. For example, if poor
parking gets more travelers and employees to leave their cars at home and take
mass transit to airports, that should be an overall benefit. However, studies
show this rarely happens in meaningful volume and the airports still lose
revenue. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

are coming to a street near you…faster than you may realize. "They"
are driverless cars: cars that drive themselves with little or no human
intervention. There are certainly many potential benefits associated with
driverless cars, but there is also huge uncertainty whether people will fear or
embrace them. The way society responds to the driverless cars will have numerous
ramifications on urban design and car parking.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">One
scenario for the future is that shared or "pooled" driverless cars reduce
the total number of cars on the road. Imagine opening an app on your smartphone
and, in less than a minute or two, having a driverless car waiting to take you
wherever you want to go. Reducing the number of cars means less space needed
for car parking. However, before urban planners start considering which parking
facilities to tear down, it might be best to see whether driverless cars
actually do lead to a reduction in the number of cars. There are a number of
interesting alternative scenarios and issues to consider.<br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">Privately
owned driverless cars, like today's cars, will require parking
spaces...somewhere. However, a curious phenomenon might occur with driverless
cars. Rather than putting a car into some distant parking space, there will be
temptation to have a driverless car circle the block repeatedly while the owner
goes shopping or to work. Imagine the traffic nightmare that would result when
just a few dozen people do this.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><br />Another
scenario suggests the popularity of driverless cars will increase the number of
cars on the road as well as the number of miles driven. Suppose it becomes
affordable and convenient for the average family to have driverless car for
each adult and child. Individual driverless cars could take each child to and
from a different school, to sports, to after-school and weekend events without
bothering the parents. Fourteen-year old Mary can have her driverless car take
her wherever she wants, whenever she wants. Where will all of the extra cars be
parked?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><br />Driverless
cars may also make it convenient for people to commute longer distances or for
more people to live in the suburbs and commute to jobs in urban centers. This
raises the question of what effect driverless cars might have on public
transportation and mass transit. This potential scenario has driverless cars
increasing the number of cars on the road…and requiring more parking spaces.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><br />Even
in the shared or "pooled" scenario, driverless cars will require
parking spaces. There would be a very high peak demand for driverless cars in
mornings and evenings. That demand reduces substantially during the evening and
overnight hours. Driverless cars not needed during off-peak hours have to be
parked somewhere since driving them around empty all night would not be
feasible. Moreover, Peter F. Sweatman, Director of the University of Michigan’s
Transportation Research Institute, suggests the concept of shared driverless
cars may not easily happen: “If it’s a purely societal benefit, it ain’t gonna
happen. This will only happen by being highly attractive to consumers.” </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><br />It
seems there may be fewer reasons to believe that driverless cars will reduce
the demand for car parking spaces. If driverless cars do become popular,
however, what would be more logical than to have "driverless car
parking"? Fortunately, driverless car parking is already available and
growing in popularity…it's called the automated parking system or APS. Having
been around in various forms for some time, constantly updated with the latest
technology, automated parking systems are enjoying resurgence in popularity in
many applications and are waiting for those driverless cars to appear.</span></div>

property to generate profit is a complex act involving many factors. Increasingly,
car parking is a major factor in urban and suburban property development
decision-making. From aesthetic impact and a minimum number of spaces to land
usage and sustainability mandates, car parking challenges can turn a potentially
profitable development into an abandoned project. Developers looking for
solutions to car parking challenges should consider automated parking systems
(APS). Here's ten reasons why…<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<ol>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">APS significantly <b>reduce the land area needed</b> to park cars…allowing for more
profitable land use.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">APS enable car parking in otherwise <b>unusable space</b>…making development projects
more profitable or sometimes even making them possible.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Flexible designs, substantially smaller volumes and other inherent features
have the potential to shift capital cost and project profitability for the
better.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">APS <b>reduce costs </b>by require no or minimal lighting, ventilation, clean up,
operating staff, security patrols, etc.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">When it comes to <b>sustainable </b>car parking, APS have many advantages such as

tend to fall into a special category when it comes to car parking problems and
solutions.</span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><br />
Many new hospitals built in what were sparsely developed areas in the mid-20<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span>
century now find themselves trapped by decades of urban development. Because a central,
easily accessible location is vital to the services they provide, moving to a
more distant area is not usually a viable option. Urbanization means that the
size of the population in the community they serve has probably more than
tripled since the doors opened for the first time. The level of medical
intervention has increased substantially over the decades, and in many
countries, hospitals have been consolidated into fewer but larger facilities while
the available land has not increased at all. Decades of increasing motorization
results in visitors and employees needing ever more parking spaces. Moreover,
the growth in outpatient services adds even more pressure to the parking shortfalls
many hospitals are currently experiencing. Very efficient use of scarce land is
a necessity.</span><br />

tradeoffs in land used for healthcare facilities and land needed for car
parking is difficult and sometimes impossible. Nonetheless, car-parking
problems affect both the hospitals' profitability and customer satisfaction.
Appointments missed because people can't find parking in a reasonable time increase
service inefficiencies and patient backlogs for the hospital. Missing
appointments because of hospital parking problems present serious issues for
patients: rescheduling, lost time, extra transportation costs, delays in getting
care, etc.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

article, in August 2014, about a growing problem involving parking spaces,
particularly in Germany: the parking spaces are too small. Spaces in many
parking facilities were on the small end of the size spectrum when built. As car
sizes continue to increase, what was originally an adequate parking space size
has become problematic. By way of example, the article points out that the
Volkswagen Golf, the best-selling car in Germany, has little extra room to park
in a typical space…even opening car doors can be difficult.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

maneuvering in tight spaces. Some optimism is offered about the proximity sensors,
cameras and other collision-avoidance features found on high-end cars. It is
suggested that a 360-degree view outside the car could help prevent scrapes and
scratches, however that assumes the driver (or the car) could act quickly
enough. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

what are parking facility owners and insurance companies to do about increasing

the optimum solution for parking cars in urban (read as dense populations)
areas? Some would say getting rid of the cars is the optimum solution to car
parking challenges. But, cars or other types of personal vehicles are going to
be with us for a long time to come since complementary to the public
transportation systems and they all need to be parked. That being the case,
we’ll put technology aside and simply consider the optimum car parking
solutions.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span></span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Before
we begin, we should recognize that optimum has different meanings to car parking
users, parking operators, city planners, developers and investors. The
individual characteristics of an optimum solution, therefore, should be
beneficial or at least neutral for all stakeholders. <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

are major characteristics of optimum urban car parking solutions:<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Notice
that we didn’t include anything about specific technologies or costs. Urban car
parking solutions require a compromise of the characteristics listed above plus
costs, technology and other criteria. For example, local codes may define the
number and location of parking spaces a business must provide while also
limiting building and architectural options. This may preclude the use of
certain technologies and have an effect on costs and other characteristics.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span></span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Optimum
urban car parking solutions require thinking beyond the application and modification
of conventional parking structures. Very large, centrally located car parks may
be great solutions in certain locations and may be poor solutions in other
locations. Various technologies make underground parking easier, more
attractive and less costly than conventional solutions. <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

<span lang="EN-US"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US">“It is estimated that about 30 percent of
the cars circling a city at any given time are doing so as drivers look for
parking. Aside from the frustration factor, those cars are creating traffic
congestion, viewed by survey respondents as being the single most significant
societal change affecting the parking industry. From an environmental
standpoint, that translates to incalculable amounts of wasted fuel and carbon
emissions.” This is from the International Parking Institute (IPI) 2012
Emerging Trends in Parking Study.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US">“Congestion and parking are also
interrelated since looking for a parking space (called "cruising")
creates additional delays and impairs local circulation. In central areas of
large cities, cruising may account for more than 10% of the local circulation
as drivers can spend 20 minutes looking for a parking spot.“ This is from Dr.
Jean-Paul Rodrigue of Hofstra University’s Department of Global Studies and
Geography.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US">The causes of traffic congestion (or
“traffic jams”) tend to be complex, but they all come down to having too many
cars on the same streets at the same time. Recurring traffic congestion is most
frequently the result of roadways having insufficient capacity for the volume
of cars…too many cars or too little road. Alternatively, accidents, breakdowns,
construction and other events that randomly restrict traffic flow are the
typical cause of non-recurring traffic jams.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US">A lack of parking is not the sole reason
for traffic congestion; it is, however, a major contributing factor. Drivers
looking for free or low-cost on-street parking may bypass off-street parking
simply to save money…and contribute to traffic congestion. Off-street parking
located too far away from shopping or retail businesses may also cause drivers
to circle in search of parking that is more convenient. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US">Casey Jones, chairman of the (IPI), is
quoted as saying, "If we can cut the time it takes drivers to find a
parking spot by even a fraction, the difference in our carbon footprint is
meaningful. And, that's what many new technologies are making possible."<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US">We agree. <b>Minimizing unnecessary circling

smaller facilities closer to more popular destinations…</b> is one potential method

parking systems (APS) are ideal for putting parking spaces in small or
otherwise unusable areas closer to retail or high-volume destinations. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Climate change continues to be a hot topic
(bad puns intentional throughout). The billion-plus cars on the world’s
roadways are a substantial target of often heated debates because of the
greenhouse gases they produce. What few people realize is that, parking cars

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US">Now, we don’t take sides in the whirlwind
of climate change issues. Rather, we simply consider the most basic fact: Disturbing
the environment too much is a bad idea. Of course, all of the climate
change and other environmental concerns revolve around the question, “What’s
too much?” We don’t know the answer, but we have some observations.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

two pulleys (or drums) with a continuous belt running between them. One or both
pulleys can be powered “drive pulleys” or one can be an unpowered “idler
pulley”. To prevent the belt from sagging, either rollers or a flat plate/pan
can support the belt between the pulleys. The choice of rollers or plate
usually depends on the characteristics of the material or whatever that’s being
moved. Flat plates are resistant to dirt and dust and support the belt
uniformly. Rollers are better at distributing and carrying heavier, rigid
objects. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

than a single, wide conveyor belt, car parking uses two narrower conveyor belts

by a single drive shaft. The connected drive pulleys permit both conveyor belts
to be driven by a single motor.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

always sits on its tires on the conveyor belt and is not touched in any other

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Pallets are used in a variety of automated
and semi-automated parking systems. Like a car-sized plate, the pros and cons
of pallets have been debated for decades. The current trend toward pallet-less
systems may be a bad idea if the alternatives create more problems. We’ll
explain as we look at some of the pros and cons of pallets.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">First off, we should make clear that a car-parking
pallet is a flat, movable structure for a car to sit upon as it is transported
and parked within some type of parking system. The car remains on the pallet
until it leaves the car system. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The
Pros<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Since cars aren’t designed to be moved
without a driver or lifted, the car parking pallet simplifies the transport of
a car within a parking system. The car’s tires rest on the pallet and all
mechanical transport apparatus interface with the pallet. This minimizes the
complexity of transport mechanisms since no accommodations for car size
(wheelbase, width, ground clearance, etc.) are required. It also means that no
equipment such as robotic or other lifting mechanisms touch the car. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Moreover, car-parking pallets may provide
some maintenance and environmental benefits. Parked cars drip, leak and drop
all types of liquids and solids from rainwater, snow, coolants and lubricants to
road dirt, sand, salt and debris. Capturing these materials on the pallet can
reduce clean up within the parking system. If the materials collected on the pallets
are disposed of properly, then the parking system prevents them from entering
the environment.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The
Cons<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">One downside of car-parking pallets is the
logistics: moving and storing empty pallets. For example, when two cars
sequentially enter a parking system, an empty pallet must be located and moved
into place to pick up the second car for parking. What do you do with empty
pallets when they aren’t in use? Regardless the answer, there is very likely
some loss of efficiency due to the movement and storage of empty pallets. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Furthermore, pallets are typically sized to
accommodate the largest possible vehicle since the logistical challenge of
using two sizes of pallets is considerable. This leads to all parking spaces
being the same size as the pallet. Parking subcompact cars in spaces designed
for full-size cars isn’t as space efficient as having parking spaces for
different car sizes. </span></span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Car-parking pallets are not weightless.
This means an increase in the energy used to transport cars.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The arguments for and against car-parking
pallets are complex since they are integral to such important factors as speed,
space and energy efficiency, maintenance and reliability. Intuitively,
eliminating pallets seems advantageous. However, slow, delicate and
high-maintenance robotic transport systems may be less capable and less
reliable than using pallets. The bottom line is that automated parking systems
transport designs, with or without pallets, should be thoroughly evaluated. </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

efficiency and comfort. Actually, we all want those things even when we’re
simply doing the daily commute. Airline travel requires so many different and
tedious activities, speed, efficiency and comfort may seem to be fantasies. This
is frequently true for airport parking. For anyone who travels regularly, it
comes as no surprise that passengers and airport parking have not been the
highest priority at airports. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US">Airport historically viewed the airlines,
their largest source of revenue, as their “real” customers. Accommodating

revenue from parking, real estate, retail, advertising, and food-and-beverage
providers has been part of the airport’s revenue mix. Recently, however,
declining airline economics have required airports to become more reliant on
non-aeronautical revenues, with many airports deriving more than half of total
revenues from such sources. Airports now have the opportunity to focus on
passengers as ‘customers’. This is a real opportunity for airports to transform
their current airport business model that will result in increased
non-aeronautical revenues.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 36.0pt;">
<span lang="EN-US"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US">Of all the noted non- aeronautical items
listed, airport parking may well prove to be the most difficult in terms of
increasing revenue. Most airports already utilize all available space near the
terminals for parking, which makes the addition of more parking garage space
difficult. Airports also face uncertain financial outlooks about parking
revenues when competing with off-property parking operations for passengers
looking to trade economy for convenience and speed. There is, however, an
alternative parking solution for airports.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

back increasing pressure exerted by earth and water. Earth shoring systems for
deep excavations commonly consist of retention systems that act as walls to
keep earth in place and support systems that support and brace retention
systems.</span></span></div>

the size and depth of necessary excavations compared to multi-story parking
garages. The reduced level-to-level height means that excavation depths for APS
are roughly 25 to 30% less than for conventional underground garages. This
translates into substantial savings in excavation costs as well as reduced
project risk, shorter schedules, less disruption and construction traffic.</span></span><br />

Although the figures vary a bit by source, the populations of major cities that
year may seem surprisingly large: London (6+ million), New York (4+ million),
Paris (3+ million), Berlin (2+ million), and Chicago and Vienna (1+ million
each). Unlike today, urban residents in 1900 were extremely anxious to see the
number of gasoline-powered vehicles grow rapidly in their cities. But, why? We’ll
explain the little-known relationship between horses, cars and car parking.</span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Starting around 1890, there was a rapidly
growing chorus of complaints about the common horse throughout cities and towns
of all sizes around the world. A horse powered each taxi. Streetcars needed
twelve or more horses each day. Carts, wagons, buggies and so forth also
required horses. As many as 60,000, or more, horses would have inhabited a city
of 6 million people such as London. The streets of London would be covered with
roughly 20 million kg (22,500 US tons) of horse manure and 3.5 million liters (900,000
US gallons) of horse urine…each month! Besides the smell and mess, horse
pollution created breeding grounds for typhoid fever and the “typhoid fly”. One
1908 article even reported, "maladies that fly in the dust, created mainly
by horse manure", were responsible for the deaths of as many as 22,000
people each year in New York City. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Life for horses working in urban areas was equally
unpleasant. The average life span for a horse was less than 5 years with more
than 15,000 dead horses requiring removal from New York city streets as early
as 1880. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US"></span><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">It’s easy to see why the concept of any
transportation means without a digestive tract was so appealing. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US"></span><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">By the start of the 20th century, the
automobile industry was beginning a rapid and robust development especially in
France, where 30,204 vehicles were produced in 1903… almost 50% of world
automobile production that year. The Ford Motor Company started the same year.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US"></span><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">We know that nothing is ever as easy as it
seems.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US"></span><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">While cars were rapidly replacing horses,
there came another problem…parking! Early cars weren’t very weather resistant
with their open tops and leather interiors. Therefore, they needed indoor
parking and horse stables were converted readily into the first car parking
facilities. It didn’t take long for entrepreneurs to recognize the demand for
urban car parking that minimized the amount of land required.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US"></span><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">An interesting factoid is that many of
earliest parking garages utilized elevators to move cars to upper floors for
parking…making them the precursor of the automated parking systems. The move
from elevators to ramp-type parking garages didn’t begin in earnest until the
1920s. There doesn’t seem to be much of a movement to eliminate cars by populating
urban areas with thousands of horses. However, there is a movement for more
efficient and environmentally friendly parking using smaller automated parking
systems.</span></span></div>
